Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India: The Department of Women and Child Development was set up in the year 1985 as a part of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to give the much needed impetus to the holistic development of women and children. With effect from 30.01.2006, the Department has been upgraded to a Ministry. The broad mandate of the Ministry is to have holistic development of women and children. As a nodal Ministry for the advancement of women and children, the Ministry formulates plans, policies and programmes; enacts/ amends legislation, guides and coordinates the efforts of both governmental and non-governmental organisations working in the field of Women and Child Development.

Central Adoption Resource Agency: The Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) is an Autonomous Body under the Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India. Its mandate is to find a loving and caring family for every orphan/destitute/surrendered child in the country.

Central Social Welfare Board: The Central Social Welfare Board came into being in an era when welfare services for the disadvantaged sections of society were not systematised and the welfare infrastructure was not yet a formal construct.Apart from undertaking a number of welfare schemes for women and children, CSWB acts as an interface between the resources of the Government and the energy and outreach of the voluntary sector.

Central Statistical Organisation: The Central Statistical Organisation is responsible for coordination of statistical activities in the country, and evolving and maintaining statistical standards. Its activities include National Income Accounting; conduct of Annual Survey of Industries, Economic Censuses, compilation of Index of Industrial Production, as well as Consumer Price Indices for Urban Non-Manual Employees, Human Development Statistics, Gender Statistics, imparting training in official statistics, etc.

Directorate of Research on Women in Agriculture: The NRCWA was set up in 1996 at Bhubaneswar and was upgraded as the Directorate of Research on Women in Agriculture (DRWA) from 2008. Its mandate includes carrying out research to identify gender issues and test appropriateness of available farm-technologies/ programmes/policies with women perspective; to do training and consultancy for promoting gender mainstreaming in research and extension for empowerment of farmwomen and capacity building of scientists, planners and policy makers to respond to the needs of the farm women.

Food and Nutrition Board: The Food & Nutrition Board (FNB), set up in 1964, is an attached office of the Ministry of Women & Child Development and has a countrywide set up. Its activities include nutrition education and training; nutrition awareness campaigns; development, production and distribution of nutrition education/training material; trahining in home scale preservation of fruits and vegetables; development and promotion of locally available nutritious foods; food analysis and standardization; and follow up action on National Nutrition Policy.

International Institute of Population Sciences: In 1956, the United Nations, the Government of India and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, jointly established the Institute to serve as a regional center for teaching, training and conducting research in the area of population studies in the ESCAP region. Prior to 1970, the IIPS was popularly known as Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC). It was declared as a deemed university on August 15, 1985. The Institute is an autonomous institution under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It also offers academic courses to strengthen the reproductive health, research and training programmes and provides consultancy to government and non-governmental organizations and other academic institutions.

National AIDS Control Organisation: NACO is a division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that provides leadership to HIV/AIDS control programme in India through 35 HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Societies. In 1986, following the detection of the first AIDS case in the country, the National AIDS Committee was constituted in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. As the epidemic spread, need was felt for a nationwide programme and an organisation to steer the programme. In 1992 India’s first National AIDS Control Programme (1992-1999) was launched, and National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) was constituted to implement the programme.

National Centre of Gender Training Planning and Research: was established as an autonomous body in 1998 to mainstream gender in policy, and to establish gender as priority concern in all government programmes to ensure the equitable development of men and women. The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration being the nodal agency in imparting administrative training has join hands with NCGTPR to delivers gender training through courses and sensitization inputs for understanding the conceptual and analytical gender relations framework, for the Officer Trainees of All India Service, and Central Services in the Foundation Course, Phase-I, Phase-II. Apart from this the training is imparted to the officers of middle to senior level members of the IAS and officers promoted to the IAS from the state civil services attending in-service induction programmes.

National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) was set up in March 2007 under the Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005. The Commission's mandate is to ensure that all laws, policies, programmes, and administrative mechanisms are in consonance with the child rights perspective as enshrined in the Constitution of India and also the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. A child is defined as a person in the 0 to 18 years age group.

National Commission for Women: The National Commission for Women was set up as statutory body in January 1992 under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990 ( Act No. 20 of 1990 of Govt.of India ) to  review the Constitutional and legal safeguards for women ; recommend remedial legislative measures ; facilitate redressal of grievances and to advise the Government on all policy matters affecting women. States have their own State Commissions for Women.

National Human Rights Commission: The NHRC was set up under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 with a mandate to investigate violations of human rights; undertake and promote research in the field of human rights; to spread human rights literacy; to recommend effective implementation of international human rights treaties and to review constitutional and legal safeguards for the protection of human rights. Most states have their own State Human Rights Commissions.

National Resource Centre for Gender in Agriculture: A National Gender Resource Centre in Agriculture (NGRCA) has been set up under the Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, to mainstream the gender concerns and add gender dimension to agriculture policies and programmes; and to render advisory services for gender mainstreaming.

National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development: NIPCCD is devoted to promotion of voluntary action research, training and documentation in the overall domain of women and child development.  Established in New Delhi in the year 1966 under Societies Registration Act of 1860, it functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The Institute, over a period of time, has established four Regional Centres at Guwahati, Bangalore, Lucknow and Indore.

National Population Commission: The terms of reference of the Commission are to review, monitor and give directions for the implementation of the National Population Policy with a view to meeting the goals set out in the Policy; to promote inter-sectoral coordination in planning and implementation across government agencies of the Central and State Governments,; o involve the civil society and the private sector and to explore the possibilities of international cooperation in support of the goals set out in the Policy; to facilitate the development of a vigorous people's movement in support of this national effort; and to promote synergy between demographic, educational, environmental and developmental programmes so as to hasten population stabilization.

National Resource Centre for Women: The NRCW was set up by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to create an information base and disseminate information in the fields of women’s development and also facilitate generation of data on contemporary issues of women in development; to provide networking facilities to institutions and individuals actively engaged in the field of women’s empowerment; and to assimilate the gender perspective in policies, planning, implementation and monitoring in selected sectors.

Planning Commission: The Planning Commission was set up by a Resolution of the Government of India in March 1950. The Planning Commission was charged with the responsibility of making assessment of all resources of the country, augmenting deficient resources, formulating plans for the most effective and balanced utilisation of resources and determining priorities.The Planning Commission plays an integrative role in the development of a holistic approach to the policy formulation in critical areas of human and economic development.

Registrar General & Census Commissioner: The responsibility of conducting the decennial Census rests with the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India under Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. The Census Organisation was initially set up on an ad-hoc basis for each Census till the 1951 Census. The Census Act was enacted in 1948 and the Government of India decided in May 1949 to initiate steps for developing systematic collection of statistics on the Indian population and established an organisation in the Ministry of Home Affairs under Registrar General and ex-Officio Census Commissioner, India. This organisation was made responsible for generating data on population statistics including Vital Statistics and Census. Later, this office was also entrusted with the responsibility of implementation of Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 in the country. In 2003 this office has been assigned the work of a pilot project on Multipurpose National Identity Card (MNIC). This pilot project is under implementation in 12 States and one Union territory covering a population of 3.1 million.
